Gorilla trekking– and so much more

Rwanda is revered as the home of the best mountain gorilla viewing on Earth, while our properties at Volcanoes National Park are globally recognised as sublime bases for primate trekking. Add to this our sought-after safari experiences in Akagera National Park, and the chimpanzees of Gishwati and Nyungwe forests, to see how our Rwandan portfolio delivers unquestionably the best one-stop East African safari in the region.

Volcanoes National Park

Raw and exhilarating. Nothing prepares you for the moment you first encounter a mountain gorilla in the wild. One of the very best wildlife encounters on Earth.

Akagera National Park

Vast and undiscovered. Scenic Akagera is delightfully unexplored, yet its hills and lakes are home to dense concentrations of plains game, big cats and astonishing rare birds.

Nyungwe Forest

Rich and thrilling. Nyungwe, famous for its chimpanzee viewing, is rich in biodiversity and home to one of the oldest rainforests in Africa.

Don’t just take our word for it

Breathless

Fantastic base for Akagera safaris

Hard to describe in words the Bisate experience. The location, villa, views, food, etc. it’s truly magical and breathtaking. Bisate only has 6 villas and the service is truly on a level of its own. We had so many personal staff members that contributed to this experience but a quick shout-out to the incredible Chef Innocent (who became our personal chef to accommodate our diet restrictions), our superb food manager Benjamin (keep smiling and delighting!) and lastly the wonderful lodge Manager Tiffany. We will cherish this experience forever.

“Having had numerous memorable stays in Wilderness lodges in Botswana, Magashi was an obvious choice for our first trip to Rwanda. The camp is beautifully designed and in a stunning location along the shore of Lake Rwanyakazinga. The luxury cabins are spread out, very private, immaculately clean, and have everything you need. Even when we experienced some heavy rain one afternoon, they remained comfortable, and watching the lake change with the weather just made the trip all the more romantic. The common lounge, bar and dining areas are also beautiful, and well laid out to take advantage of the stunning view.”

With the option of helicopter transfers transfers between camps, you’ll also get the unique opportunity to see Rwanda from above. Unique scenery, wildlife, and cultures are waiting to be revealed, and we at Wilderness can’t wait to share them with you.

Do you cater for different dietary requirements?

What does a typical day on safari look like?

A typical day’s gorilla or golden monkey trekking starts early at Volcanoes National Park HQ, where your pre-booked permit is issued. This is also when you are allocated to a gorilla group for your trek. After your trek you’ll warm up by the fire back in your sublime forest villa, and consider rounding out the day with an inspiring village visit, or settle in for a massage in the privacy of your room. Get closer to Akagera’s wildlife on morning and afternoon game drives. Slow down and enjoy the finer details of our wild places on a boating safari and marvel at the things you’d miss when in a vehicle. Back in camp, relax by the pool, as you contemplate what cocktail to enjoy at sunset. The choice is all yours.
