BEST OF TANZANIA
An authentic East African adventure
While Tanzania’s safari circuit centres around the iconic Serengeti National Park, where the Great Migration occurs, several other national parks in Northern Tanzania offer an extensive exploration of safari options. The abundance of wildlife is simply outstanding, while adding the Indian Ocean islands of Zanzibar and Pemba is ideal for a classic bush-and-beach escape.
The Serengeti
Tanzania’s premier national park is one of the Seven Wonders of Africa. It is part of an ecosystem that extends into Kenya’s Masai Mara, and is famed as one of the world’s most sought-after safari locations.
Ngorongoro Crater
This large caldera is home to a high density of lions and buffalo. It is also one of Tanzania’s last refuges for the black rhinoceros, while elephants and the tiny, endemic Mduma's Shrew can also be found here.
Lake Manyara
Lake Manyara is famous for its tree climbing lions as well as its large flocks of waterbirds such as lesser flamingos that congregate on the soda lake. It offers unique photographic opportunities in a stunning landscape.
Tarangine
This park consists of savannah plains dotted with majestic baobabs. There is a huge diversity of wildlife to be found here, including large herds of elephants, eland, giraffe, lion, buffalo, cheetah, leopard, and zebra. It is also home to prolific birdlife.
Zanzibar
Zanzibar is famed for its white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and rich cultural history. Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well worth a visit, while the island’s dhow-lined shores make it the perfect complement to a Tanzanian safari.

Amazing experiences
Highly recommend partnering with Wilderness
“This is my 3rd trip with Wilderness and to their camps in Africa. Each trip just gets better. The attention to detail in each camp is superior beyond words. The food, the settings, the guides, the staff .... everything and everyone is incredible. They greet you at the airports to make sure you are able to get through without issues. And they get you from camp to camp on the internal flights - which are much fun! I recommend them to all my friends and hope to return to Africa again in the future.”
“Nelson our travel agent put together the perfect honeymoon in Tanzania - which included a combination of safari and Zanzibar beach holiday. Communication and planning in the run up went well, he quickly understood what we were looking for and provided a clear, comprehensive quote, meeting all our desires for the trip. The trip itself went seamlessly and we enjoyed every stay and experience we had planned - even more than we could have imagined.”

How do I plan my journey?
Our travel designers are here to help you every step of the way. Contact us and one of our experienced Travel Designers will get in touch with you to plan your perfect safari. And when we say, every step of the way, we mean it. From speaking to you about your dream trip to putting together journey options, planning the perfect circuit, schedule private road and air transfers, and even easing you through customs. We’re with you on the ground, at your side, 24-7, from start to finish.
Is Tanzania safe for first-time travellers to Africa?
Tanzania is one of Africa’s most stable and well-established safari destinations. Wilderness handles all logistics – airport transfers, internal flights, and inter-camp movement — so you're looked after at every step. Our industry-leading incident management capability, Wilderness24, provides seamless and professional response to any risk event. Our guides are recognised leaders in the field, combining years of safari expertise with an understanding of the wildlife, allowing for safe and respectful encounters.
Is Tanzania a good destination for a first safari?
Absolutely. Tanzania is widely considered one of the best entry points into African safari travel. The Serengeti is iconic and wildlife is abundant year-round.
What exactly is a mobile safari, and is it comfortable?
A mobile safari means the camp moves seasonally to follow the wildlife – in Wilderness Usawa’s case, tracking the Great Migration across the Serengeti. Far from roughing it, each camp location offers luxury tented accommodation with ensuite bathrooms, comfortable beds and attentive service.
Will I definitely see the Great Migration?
Because Wilderness Usawa’s camp locations are chosen specifically to align with herd movements throughout the year, you have a very strong chance of witnessing the Migration at whatever stage it’s in during your visit.
How long should I spend in Tanzania?
A typical Tanzania safari runs from 7 to 10 days. For first-timers, we suggest at least 4 to 5 nights at Wilderness Usawa Serengeti to allow enough time to explore different areas of the park.
How many camps do you typically visit?
Our custom-designed journeys typically combine Wilderness Usawa Serengeti with other partner properties in Tanzania or our award-winning camps in Kenya and Rwanda, for an extensive East African safari. How many camps you visit is up to you.
What is the difference between the dry season and the green season, and which is better?
Neither is ‘better’ – they're just different experiences. The dry season (May-October) brings the dramatic Mara River crossings, while January to March is calving season, when predator activity is at its peak. The green season (November-April) means fewer vehicles, lusher landscapes and lower rates. Your Travel Designer can help match the season to what matters most to you.
Can I combine a Tanzania safari with a beach holiday?
Yes, and it’s a popular itinerary. Zanzibar lies off Tanzania's coast and is famed for its white-sand beaches and coral reefs. A few nights here after the Serengeti is a perfect way to wind down.
